In Conversation With John Hills
John Hills can you give us an update on your injury?
I got a bad tackle on my ankle in the reserves against Preston a couple of weeks ago and have been struggling with it. I went for a scan and found I have torn a ligament in my ankle so I am unfortunately I am out for the rest of the season.
It has been a frustrating season for you hasn't it?
Yes, to be honest this season has been a complete write off for me. I have only played four games and those games I have felt I have done well and I have been unfortunate not to have a run in the team that has been the most frustrating thing, but I have managed to keep going and unfortunately the injury at the end has been a bit of a hiccup.
I suppose the lack of first team opportunities is testament to the form of Craines and Wes?
Yes definitely I think Craines has been one of the most consistent players this season, he has had a really good season and he won't be far away from getting the player of the season, he has done really well. Wes is a great player and he can turn games on their head and it has been difficult to get in the team, I feel when I have got in the team I have taken my chance but I am a bit gutted that I have not had a run in the side.
You have been at the club at various stages of your career, how do you rate this squad to previous ones?
I think we have some really good players here at the minute, we work really well as a team and I am not saying we haven't had some good players in the past but as a team we gel really well and that has shown this season, I think we have had a good season, I know we have had a bad couple of results in the last week but hopefully we can get a win on Saturday.
The atmosphere at Bloomfield Road this season has been unlike any other season, as a Blackpool fan yourself you must have been impressed.
I think the achievements last year have brought quite a lot of fans to the home games and our home form has been good and I think our fans have started to come back and watch more. The last home game against West Brom was a brilliant atmosphere and hopefully with the two games we have left at Bloomfield Road the fans will turn up for both of those and with their support we will have no problems with relegation.
A lot of people are saying Saturday's game with Sheffield Wednesday is a real six pointer would you agree?
I think if we get beat it becomes something like that, even if we get a draw it isn't a bad result, it keeps them below us and depending on how the other teams down there get on those teams hopefully will stay below us. As I said a draw isn't a bad result but I think the lads will be going out for the win and I think a win will be enough.
From a personal point of view it must be disappointing not to be able to fit to face one of your former clubs.
I have stayed in touch with a lot of the lads from Wednesday, I made some really good friends during the two years I was there and Wednesday's result is the first fixture I look for after Preston. It is my birthday weekend this weekend and it would have been a nice way to spend it by playing against my old club but these things happen in football and I am old enough and wise enough to get on with it and it will be nice to catch up with a few of the lads before and after the game.
You said you had two good years at Hillsborough, but a change of manager saw things go slightly pear shaped towards the end.
I thought I did very well at Wednesday, I played well and I think the fans liked me, but when Brian Laws came in, I played five games and typically I got a kick on the ankle when we played Leeds and obviously there was nothing I could do about it and I was out for two months and I came back into side around January time and I was on the bench and the team went 11 games unbeaten and I couldn't get back in the team. At the end of the season Brian Laws had a chat with me and I was out of contract, he said he had a couple of other players who could play at left back and he explained he needed to strengthen in other areas which brought me back to Blackpool where I am happy.
Your contract with the club up is up at the end of the season, but you do have an option, if the Gaffer came and said he was taking the option would you be happy to stay?
Obviously I am happy around here it has been a frustrating season as I have already said. If I am still here next season I will make sure I come back fit and try and take my chance next season.
