Burgess On West Brom Game
POOL striker Ben Burgess feels that Seasiders deserved more from last night's game against West Brom and admits the visitors got a lift once Kevin Phillips came on.
The team looked set to add West Brom to a number of teams they have beaten at Bloomfield this season after a header from Burgess gave them the lead.
A penalty awarded to West Brom in the 81st minute appeared to turn the game on its head as Kevin Phillips - fresh off the bench - stepped up to equalise with the aid of the post.
After a great first-half performance, Burgess feels the Seasiders sat back a bit too much after the break.
"First half we battered them and then second-half we just didn't play, it was like we were just trying to stick to 1-0 really and just defend that lead," he said. "We probably should have attacked them a bit more.
"When Kevin Phillips came on for them you could see he gave all their players and fans a lift - and that was the difference really.
"I'm not sure it was a penalty but the refs given it. But we should have reacted better than that. It's still 1-1 and we still would have taken a point and it's disappointing the way we just sort of capitulated, I suppose, and then ended up losing 3-1," he added.
The Seasiders now travel to FA Cup finalists Cardiff on Saturday in search of a win that would virtually guarantee safety in the division. Burgess is hoping Pool can capitalise on the Welsh sides Cup exploits and get the three points sooner rather than later.
"We don't want it to go down to the last few weeks but if it does, it does. Obviously we want to do it against Cardiff. Hopefully they'll be still drunk from getting to the FA Cup final," he added.
