The Seasiders again had to settle for a draw after a second Mark Yeates free-kick cancelled out what looked to be a winning goal from Shaun Barker.

The Tangerines had led earlier through an Andy Morrell goal but Yeates had equalised once before with his first free-kick as Pool drew their third game in a week.

In what was a relatively quiet first half chances were few and far between in the match with both sides looking to somehow break the other down.

The first attempt on goal came in the first minute with Ben Burgess having a go from distance. That was later followed by a David Fox free-kick but that failed to break further than the wall.

The only major concern for Simon Grayson would have been the early loss of defender Ian Evatt who limped off after 25 minutes following a heavy challenge in his own box while attempting to clear the ball. The centre-back tried to run off what looked to be a knee injury on the touchline but failed to recover enough to continue and was duly replaced by Kaspars Gorkss.

Colchester failed to even muster a shot on target within the first 20 minutes with their first clear opportunity coming later in the half when a corner cannoned back over to Adam Virgo only for him to fire straight at Paul Rachubka.

Andy Morrell then looked to break free as he ran onto a Ben Burgess flick on but he just couldn't get past the opposing defender who was there to block his effort. Kem Izzet looked to break the deadlock for the U's after a free-kick played into the Pool area was flicked back across goal by the head of Clive Platt only for the clearance to fall to Izzet to fire wide.

Ben Burgess then came closest to scoring for Pool with 39 minutes on the clock but his left footed strike struck the post and went out for a goal kick. Burgess however was causing endless problems for Colchester in the air as he won nearly every long ball for his teammates to build on.

Wes Hoolahan lit up Bloomfield with his trickery and skill when he coasted in and out of the Colchester would be defenders but just couldn't find enough space to force a shot on goal. Then as half-time approached a speculative curling strike from Colchester right-back John Jackson bent just wide of Paul Rachubka's left hand post.

HALF TIME - BLACKPOOL 0 COLCHESTER UNITED 0

The second half began brighter, albeit five minutes in, when Ben Burgess forced Aidan Davison into action.

David Fox then looked to make the breakthrough with a strike from outside the area but Aidan Davison pushed his effort wide for a corner. But from that resulting corner the ball was whipped into the box for Kaspars Gorkss to flick the ball on to an unmarked ANDY MORRELL at the back post to hit the ball home (54).

The goal looked to have sparked Pool into live as six minutes later Keith Southern burst into the box to strike the ball only for his effort to go inches wide of the post.

A Wes Hoolahan cross was then headed away on another Pool attack only for the clearance to fall straight to the feet of Ben Burgess to force another decent stop from Colchester keeper Aidan Davison.

Then against what seemed to be the run of play Colchester won a free-kick outside of the area that MARK YEATES stepped up to curl around the wall and loop into the goal (63)

That goal saw Simon Grayson introduce Andy Welsh to the fray for Gary Taylor-Fletcher on the right-hand side.

Andy Morrell was the man to then make way as Pool looked to find a winner in the game - the man to replace him was Keigan Parker.

Despite the substitutions Pool failed to create another clear opening until there were seven minutes to go and Wes Hoolahan smashed the ball towards the top corner of the goal only for Davison to tip it over.

One corner followed another and it was again a set piece that Pool regained the lead when SHAUN BARKER grabbed his first goal of the season with a smashing header past the despairing Davison (84).

The goal looked to have wrapped the game up but then Colchester decided to score their second with the same situation as the first, as MARK YEATES again curled a superb free-kick around the wall and into the goal in what was a case of déjà vu (86).

In the end Pool were left to settle for a point as they now switch their attentions to the Carling Cup on Tuesday night when they take on Southend United at Bloomfield Road, kick-off 7.45pm.
