Simon Grayson said in his after match interview that the Seasiders performance was "the worst of the season", which was a more than honest reflection from the Pool boss, this was arguably the worst performance since losing at Rotherham last season. Too many had off days and as Grayson admitted his men did not do "the basics right".
With Michael Jackson ruled out through a stomach strain, Pool made change to the starting line up with Matt Jackson replacing the club captain at the heart of the defence. The only other change saw Danny Coid operate down the left and Hoolahan down the right, presumably this was to combat the threat of Jermaine Johnson's pace.
Pool started brightly and in the opening couple of minutes Keigan Parker and Wes Hoolahan combining down the Pool right.
Despite Pool's early possession, it was all Sheffield Wednesday in the opening half hour. Marcus Tudgay sent Akpo Sodje clear on six minutes and the former Port Vale man was denied by a brave block from Paul Rachubka, the ball fell kindly to Marcus Tudgay but his finish was hacked off the line by Shaun Barker.
Defender Tommy Spurr burst forward having dispossessed Hoolahan on18 minutes, the full back exchanged passes with Kavanagh before seeing a curling shot whistle just over the bar.
Four minutes later Paul Rachubka was forced into a brilliantly save when Kaspars Gorkss headed a corner goalwards
Pool were forced into a change on 27 minutes when Michael Flynn replaced the injured Keith Southern
Having been disappointing in the opening half hour Pool started to come back into the game, forcing a couple of corners and then on 36 minutes Pool took the lead David Fox floated over a corner that the Wednesday defence could only half clear, David Fox lobbed a great ball to Keigan Parker who twisted past his man before letting WES HOOLAHAN take things, the tricky Irishman beat his man before netting beyond Lee Grant, certainly one to see on Tangerine World on Monday.
On the stroke of half time, with all the big men forward Michael Flynn tried his best to become Blackpool's answer to Johnny Wilkinson when he elected to goal for goal Wilkinson style from the edge of the centre circle, needless to say his effort flew well over.
The half time whistle was greeted by a series of jeers and boos from the Wednesday faithful, something which must have been music to the ears to Simon Grayson and his players, but those jeers soon became cheers with Wednesday beginning the second half like a team possessed and Brian Laws kicking every ball on the edge of his technical area.
Two free kicks from on the edge of the area were smashed in the defensive wall, the second of which saw a massive handball from Laws and the Wednesday supporters. As well as the free kicks Wednesday forced a series of corners, the first of which saw Jermaine Johnson head wide.
After an hour the Wednesday fans suddenly woke up and got behind their team with intermittent chants for the chairman to resign, but their vocal support seemed to drive Wednesday forward.
Pool made their second change of the afternoon on 63 minutes when Claus Jrogensen replaced David Fox..
On 66 minutes Wednesday levelled the scores, Jermaine Johnson sprinted down the right wing beating substitute Claus Jorgensen who had replaced David Fox and Stephen Crainey in the process, the Jamaican crossed to MARCUS TUDGAY who at the far post headed home.
Pool were on the back foot and on 71 minutes Paul Rachubka was forced to make a fine save on 71 minutes after Michael Flynn and Matt Jackson almost let hosts in.
The resulting corner saw RICHARD HINDS rise the highest to nod Wednesday into the lead.
Despite being behind Pool created little, having said that Pool should have had a penalty on 74 minutes when Keigan Parker was sent tumbling, but the referee who started the game as fourth official had none of it and waved away the protests, that was his third poor decision, having earlier booked Keith Southern and Shaun Barker for having the audacity to win the ball in a tackle.
With just under a quarter of an hour to go Pool made their final change with Andy Welsh replacing Danny Coid, but even his introduction failed to inspire the Seasiders and Pool slipt to their fourth defeat of the season, more worryingly for Simon Grayson is that Pool have not won in their last eight games.
