 2 - 4
Date:
19/08/2006
Venue:
Ashton Gate
Attendance:
10630
Referee:
M Russell

The Seasiders recorded their first win of the season and their first win at Ashton Gate since 1996 with a 4-2 victory, few of the 10,630 attendance would have argued Pool more than deserved their lead, goals from Scott Vernon, Michael Jackson, Keigan Parker and Danny Graham saw Pool return from the South West with the three points.

SIMON GRAYSON made three changes to the starting line up at Bristol City, David Fox, Ian Evatt and Andy Morrell came in for Rory Prendergast, Danny Coid and Danny Graham. Grayson also surprised many with his formation, the majority of people at Ashton Gate expected Pool to play a wing back formation with three central defenders, but the Pool boss opted for his usual 4-4-2 formation with Shuan Barker taking the right back role with Ian Evatt, Mike Jackson and Paul Tierney lining up alongside the former Rotherham man. Simon Gillett who regularly played on the right hand side of midfield during his Southampton carrer occupied the wide right berth with Adrian Forbes switching to the left wing role, whilst Scott Vernon was given the nod to partner Andy Morrell in attack. The substitutes bench once again looked strong with Rory Prendergast, Marcus Bean and Danny Coid being the unfortunate trio to be left out of the squad.

The hosts got things underway and it was the Seasiders in their change strip who enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges, David Fox saw a long range effort take a deflection off Andy Morrell.

Bristol City forced an early corner which was well dealt with by the Pool defence.

Pool were denied an opener when Bradley Orr cleared off the line following a great piece of skill from Andy Morrell, the debutant striker reacted very quickly to get on the end of a David Fox free kick.

Simon Gillett volleyed over from the edge of the area on 11 minutes as Pool continued to be the more positive of the two sides.

Pool were denied a deserved opener a minute later, Adrian Forbes picked up the ball on the half way and burst forward leaving several Bristol City defenders in his wake, the former Swansea man found himself 12 yards out through on goal and saw his finish brilliantly saved by the Brazilian goalkeeper Adriano Basso.

At the other end Michael Jackson had to head behind for a corner on 15 minutes under pressure from Brooker, but once again the cross from the left failed to trouble the Pool backline.

The persistence of Andy Morrell earned Pool their first corner of the afternoon, David Fox, played a shot corner to the edge of the area, where Scott Vernon scooped over.

Skipper Mike Jackson was forced to put behind for a corner on 34 minutes following a cross cum shot from Showunmi. Less than a minute later Steve Brooker saw a snap shot take a deflection off Michael Jackson.

Steev Brooker should have put the hosts in the lead on 25 minutes, a Johnson free kick was met by Showunmi who headed back across goal to Brooker who saw his finish creep just wide of Rhys Evans right hand post.

The deadlock was finally broken on 27 minutes, an acrobatic over head kick from Adrian Forbes found SCOTT VERNON who nodded down before taking a couple of touches and executing a sublime finish.

Adrian Forbes seemed to be enjoying himself down the left flank and on the half hour the likable winger almost doubled Pool's lead, Forbes once again picked the ball up on the left channel and burst forward, cutting in only to see a great strike brilliantly saved by Basso.

Basso once again saved the home side on 31 minutes, this time the stopper produced a fine block to deny Andy Morrell himself through on goal following a great ball from Gillett. Seconds later Gillett saw an effort fly just over as Pool continued to dominate.

Scott Vernon saw a header from a David Fox free kick take a deflection behind for a corner as Pool continued to press.

Enoch Showunmi was arguably the most threatening player for the hosts on 38 minutes the former Luton man showed a great piece of skill to leave Shaun Barker on his backside, the big Nigerian pulled the trigger but saw his effort blocked by the head of Michael Jackson.

Andy Morell saw a snap shot comfortably saved by Basso following a huge clearance from Rhys Evans.

Simon Gillett saw another long range effort go close on 42 minutes.

Pool were made to pay for their missed chances on 43 minutes when ENOCH SHOWUNMI gave Rhys Evans no chance from 10 yards after a great cross field ball from Lee Johnson.

Half Time Bristol City 1 Blackpool 1

The interval saw Bristol City throw Dave Cotterill in place of Cole Skuse

The second half was just a couple of minutes old when Pool forced their first corner of the second period, David Fox from the left slung over a deep cross which almost eluded everyone, the ball fell to Simon Gillett who produced a Cryuff turn to wriggle free of his marker, the on loan midfielder crossed towards Morrell who despite his best efforts couldn't get on the end of it and the ball fell to MICHAEL JACKSON who stuck out a foot to volley home.

Steve Brooker squandered a glorious chance to equalise on 49 minutes, the talented forward found himself in acres of space but could only fire straight at Rhys Evans.

Pool were forced to make an early change on 51 minutes when Keigan Parker replaced Adrian Forbes who left clutching his knee, the change saw Andy Morrell switch to the left hand side of midfield with Keigan Parker partnering Scott Vernon in attack.

Keigan Parker sprang the hosts offside trap to race forward but the bounce allowed for the two central defenders to recover and Parker was forced to earn Pool a corner.

Lee Johnson saw a free kick fly just wide as Bristol tried to take a grip on the game.

Pool had the ball in the net for a third time when Scott Vernon fired home after a great delivery from David Fox, the celebrations were cut short following a flag for offside from the referees assistant. Vernon's strike partner was penalised seconds later for a similar offence and like Vernon, Parker had put the ball in the net.

Paul Brooker saw an first time strike saved at the second attempt by Rhys Evans.

Having once again dominated the half Pool found themselves back on level terms when ENOCH SHOWUNMI fired home from the penalty sport after Paul Tierney had been penalised for a foul on Cotterill.

Basso in the Bristol goal was the still the busier of the two keeper, the stopper acrobatically turned behind under pressure from Vernon before seeing out a left foot strike from Simon Gillett.

Having continued to dominate proceedings Pool took the lead for a third time, a great ball from David Fox found Ian Evatt who slide KEIGAN PARKER through on goal, the flying Scot took a touch before finishing from close range.

The goal stunned the Bristol faithful although they were brought to their feet when Lee Johnson fired agonisingly wide with Evans beaten.

Pool made their second change with seven minutes remaining when Marc Joseph replaced Paul Tierney. Two minutes later Pool made their final change when Danny Graham replaced Andy Morrell, Morrell left the field holding his hamstring.

A poor decision from the referee gave Bristol City in a dangerous area three minutes from time, David Noble stepped up and saw his effort crash into four man wall, Pool countered through Keigan Parker the livewire stirker scampered forward before threading a great cross field ball to DANNY GRAHAM, the big front man took a couple of touches, beating a man in the process and firing an unstoppable left foot finish beyond Basso.

This was no fluke, Pool fully deserved their win against one of the top sides in the division, the win should certainly quieten the doom and gloom brigade! In fact the Bristol City faithful acknowledged Pool's dominance with a standing ovation
